Leading provider of hygiene and cleaning services for businesses

A leading premium player among cleaning and multi-service providers, GSF generated 1.183 billion euros in revenue with over 41,000 employees, in France and internationally, in 2022.

With its unique network of over 160 local establishments in France, the group operates and manages a wide range of on-site services, from cleaning to delegated waste management, from reception to hospitality management, from handyman services to internal logistics. It tailors its offerings to the specific needs of each business sector and client context, with a customized organization of its teams.

Their local management, investment in continuous training, internal promotion, and employee retention form the core of GSF's model. Its overall CSR approach is rated "Platinum" by Ecovadis.
The Context

Deploying an ambitious climate strategy, gaining autonomy, and engaging its client and supplier ecosystem for decarbonization

Active and successful in the social dimension of CSR since its inception, the GSF group decided two years ago to accelerate its environmental commitments and implement an ambitious climate and energy strategy to reduce its environmental impact.

Given its core business of hygiene services, which meets the diverse expectations of its many clients, and its high consumption of inputs (chemical products, cleaning supplies, household provisions and consumables, etc.) purchased from a large number of suppliers, the group was questioning the best way to act, engage its ecosystem, and concretely reduce its carbon footprint and indirect emissions.
In this context, GSF first engaged the specialized consulting firm Incidence 8 for support in framing and implementing its overall climate strategy, specifically the completion of an initial greenhouse gas assessment across its entire value chain and the definition of an action plan and reduction trajectory by 2028 in accordance with the SBTi methodology.

Given the group's organizational complexity and the large number of stakeholders to mobilize (employees, managers, partners, suppliers, etc.) to establish and manage a reliable and comprehensive carbon footprint, Incidence 8 recommended that GSF equip itself with a carbon data management software platform on which to base its governance and climate strategy.

Incidence 8 conducted a comprehensive benchmark of solutions, and Tennaxia was selected notably for its ability to enable granular and advanced carbon measurement and analysis through the detailed modeling of organizations with numerous entities and their multiple operations and products.

GSF & Incidence 8 also paid particular attention to the platform's ease of use and adoption by operational staff who are not climate experts.
TENNAXIA & Incidence 8 Expertise

A seamless tripartite collaboration allowing GSF to benefit from the best climate consulting combined with the best carbon software capabilities

After being trained in the use of the Tennaxia platform, the Incidence 8 teams and GSF representatives autonomously carried out the activity data collection and the group's first carbon footprint assessment for 2021.

This activity data collection relies on the methodological expertise of Incidence 8 on the one hand, and a precise configuration of the GSF account in Tennaxia on the other. This configuration is based on three key functional capabilities of the platform:

➡️ The customized adaptation of the emission category tree, representing the group's operational reality. In GSF's case, Scope 3 sub-categories, particularly for purchases, were refined to detail as much as possible the different types of products bought for service delivery.

➡️ The modeling of the company's various entities and sub-entities through the configuration of the organizational tree in Tennaxia. This organizational tree notably allows for fine-grained management of access and viewing rights for GSF employees, ensuring each stakeholder is involved only within a scope relevant to them.

➡️ Tags freely and multiply associated with each collected emission data point.
This initial setup then allows for comprehensive and collaborative data collection, followed by an infinite capacity for carbon footprint analysis. With each GHG emission from the company associated with an emission category, an organizational site, and one or more tags, Tennaxia enables in-depth and completely flexible analysis of the calculated carbon footprint.

GSF notably leverages this analytical capability to communicate with the group's suppliers and clients about their specific carbon footprints, within a given scope (a set of sites, cities, or regions) or for a precise product category. in their footprint reduction efforts.

Tennaxia, for example, can answer a question like: "What is the footprint of GSF's service at a client site?" in order to adapt the service and offer "low-carbon" solutions.
GSF currently purchases over 10,000 different items from more than 2,000 suppliers. However, less than 1% of GSF's suppliers are able to provide LCAs (Life Cycle Assessments) for their products to refine GSF's Scope 3 measurement.

Incidence 8 therefore supports GSF and its purchasing teams with a pragmatic approach to initiate the reduction of their indirect emissions. This approach is based first on a maturity scoring of all suppliers, followed by more advanced discussions with the most mature suppliers and those with the largest impact on the carbon footprint of GSF's purchases.

Incidence 8 then conducts product carbon footprints for certain products, specifically to refine GSF's Scope 3 measurement and to have precise discussions with suppliers aiming to reduce their footprint. The results of these PCFs (Product Carbon Footprints) are utilized in Tennaxia by being integrated as custom emission factors, replacing generic emission factors that are too imprecise to identify concrete action levers.
The Results

This initial carbon footprint assessment for 2021 marks the starting point for GSF's future actions and commitments. The group was thus able to begin by analyzing the carbon footprint of its activities in detail:

➡️ Indirect emissions account for over 93% of GSF's carbon footprint in 2021.

➡️ Inputs represent 41% of the total carbon footprint. Within this category, for example, the purchase of chemical products accounts for over 5% of the group's total footprint.

➡️ Travel accounts for 37% of the total carbon footprint, with over 83% of emissions attributed to the daily home-to-work commutes of more than 40,000 employees.

This initial carbon accounting, carried out according to the GHG Protocol methodology, allowed GSF to publicly demonstrate its impact and make credible commitments to reduce it.

➡️ GSF has been responding to the CDP since 2021 and, in this context, continues its work on climate-related risks and opportunities. In 2022, GSF published its full carbon footprint for the first time by responding to the CDP questionnaire.

➡️ In 2023, GSF also structured its objectives according to the framework defined by the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi), which GSF joined in 2022. Following the measurement exercise, GSF indeed worked on its carbon trajectory objectives and aligned them with the SBTi framework. Incidence 8 and GSF have begun modeling an emissions reduction action catalog in Tennaxia, which will then be deployed area by area to operational teams.

The precise measurement of its carbon emissions also allowed GSF This led to initial discussions with GSF clients regarding their specific footprint, which can be analyzed using Tennaxia, and the climate and biodiversity-related risks and opportunities that concern them jointly. These discussions have already led to modifications in GSF's services (products used, schedules, etc.) for certain clients, resulting in direct emissions reductions across the entire value chain without compromising the quality of services provided by GSF.

Regarding emissions related to employee commuting, GSF is working to reduce them by activating several levers: modifying specific services requested by clients (which again requires raising client awareness of their impact and working hand-in-hand with them on this topic), adapting its internal work organization, and finally, electrifying its vehicle fleet.

The Tennaxia platform is ergonomic, easy to use, and facilitates discussion with our stakeholders (clients, suppliers, certification bodies, etc.) on decarbonization topics.
