Long-standing distributor of products and mobility services in overseas territories

The Citadelle Group is a mobility operator and a major player in the retail and vehicle distribution landscape in the French Overseas Territories. The group, which employs over 600 people, notably owns several companies specializing in automotive retail, spread across Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Mayotte, and Reunion Island.

The company's activities include the sale and rental of new and used vehicles, both in physical stores and online, the sale of tires and spare parts, and more recently, the launch of shared mobility service offerings.

The group represents and distributes brands such as Suzuki, Toyota, Citroën, Audi, Volkswagen, Seat, and Hyundai in its territories. The group is responsible for the marketing strategy, positioning, and pricing for the brands it represents.
The Context

Addressing the challenge of transitioning a highly emissive sector

The Citadelle Group has always strived to support the dynamism of overseas territories and play a role in their economic and social development. As an automotive distributor and mobility operator, the group has long been aware that its activities have a significant impact on the environment, particularly due to its substantial contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.

To acquire the capability to measure its carbon footprint across all emission scopes with high precision, despite the diversity of its retail activities.

To conduct this measurement annually to manage its footprint long-term and internalize skills as much as possible to repeat the exercise independently after the initial measurement.

To be able to analyze emissions in detail by category and scope, in order to compare the evolution of emission sources and track progress and any regressions over time.

To be able to model a concrete action plan to genuinely commit to a credible emission reduction trajectory and monitor its progress over time.

TENNAXIA's Expertise

Precise carbon measurement to build a concrete action plan

Tennaxia supported the Citadelle Group teams in completing their full Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon accounting for 2021, while also providing them with the necessary methodological knowledge, enabling them to independently conduct their annual carbon footprint measurement on the Tennaxia platform today.

To achieve the most precise Scope 3 measurement possible, the Tennaxia teams specifically provided the expertise required for calculating the carbon footprint related to vehicles, with the highest possible granularity in considering different fuel types and vehicle segments.

Tennaxia also enabled the Citadelle Group to model a catalog of emission reduction actions as well as various reduction trajectories by scope (country, brand, activity, etc.). The platform's interfaces allow teams to visualize the potential impact of the actions they choose to include in their action plan, based on their carbon assessment, which will be revised annually. Modeling the carbon impact of action levers allows teams to make informed decisions when prioritizing their strategy to maximize the positive impact of their climate strategy.
The Results

Prioritizing action based on reliable and actionable carbon analysis

After assisted carbon measurement in 2021, the Citadelle Group teams conducted their 2022 carbon assessment independently on the Tennaxia platform. This allowed the Citadelle Group to analyze the carbon footprint of its activities in detail. For example:

➡️ The majority of the group's greenhouse gas emissions are due to the use of products sold and leased, accounting for 70%. Vehicle use primarily corresponds to the fuel and/or electricity consumption of vehicles sold throughout their lifespan.

➡️ The use of new gasoline vehicles sold by the group accounts for 30% of the group's total emissions. Since internal combustion and hybrid vehicles are significantly more emissive in use and currently represent the majority of the group's sales, they account for the bulk of emissions in this category for the group, 100 times more than electric vehicles. It's worth noting that electricity in the French overseas departments and territories (DROM-COM) is almost 10 times more carbon-intensive than in mainland France.

Indirect GHG emissions, associated with Scope 3 emission categories, therefore represent 99% of the Citadelle Group's emissions and thus constitute the primary area for exploring decarbonization levers for the group's activities.

While the group is partly dependent on external developments to reduce its footprint, both concerning the decarbonization of products sold and the evolution of low-carbon electricity charging equipment for end-users, it can nevertheless activate a set of levers to decarbonize.

In terms of activity, car dealerships account for 91% of the group's total footprint, making it essential for the group to engage all its subsidiaries in clear action plans so that concrete actions can be implemented on the ground.

The detailed analysis of the carbon footprint has therefore enabled the Citadelle Group to identify and then model the carbon reduction potential of a set of actions that will form the core of the group's decarbonization strategy, and to assign them appropriately to the sub-activity perimeters comprising countries, subsidiaries, and brands.
➡️ Diversifying the offering with new forms of mobility to align with the profound trend of changing consumer habits in terms of transportation, from individual ownership to multimodal use of soft and shared mobility.

➡️ Raising awareness and training group employees, and especially customers, in eco-driving. Eco-responsible driving optimizes vehicle fuel consumption during use and reduces GHG emissions and other associated pollutants.

➡️ Modifying the product mix highlighted in dealerships to promote the sale of more environmentally friendly vehicles. While the group, as a multi-brand vehicle distributor, is dependent on manufacturers' choices regarding the product range, it can nevertheless influence the product mix presented to consumers.

➡️ For procurement, reducing the need for air transport by working on better order planning.
